Taunton came alive on Saturday 17th October 2026 as thousands of spectators lined the streets for the town’s spectacular 59th annual illuminated carnival. Despite the chilly autumn temperatures, the weather remained dry, providing ideal conditions for one of Somerset’s most eagerly anticipated annual events.

With more than 50 entries taking part, this year’s procession was a dazzling showcase of creativity, craftsmanship, music and community spirit. The streets were transformed into a magical display of colour and light as giant illuminated floats, affectionately known locally as “carts”, made their way through the town, accompanied by elaborately costumed walking entries and lively musical performances.
As the grand finale of the South Somerset carnival circuit, Taunton Carnival once again demonstrated why it remains such a special occasion in the local calendar. Months of hard work, dedication and imagination were evident in every entry, with carnival clubs delivering spectacular displays that captivated audiences of all ages.

Among this year’s standout entries were Yellow Brick Road, The Mustachery, Scarecrows (Pumpkin Harvest) and Tribal Warrior, each bringing its own unique character and creativity to the procession. However, it was the sensational The Blitz – Heroes Of The Homefront that took the coveted overall Class 1 Feature winner title, providing a memorable highlight in an evening packed with impressive displays. Apple FM was proud to be part of the celebrations, taking to the procession alongside its travel sponsor, Grab-A-Cab. Meanwhile, a dedicated team of Apple FM presenters brought the excitement directly to listeners by broadcasting live commentary from the street outside the station’s premises near North Street. Their coverage helped ensure that those unable to attend in person could still enjoy the atmosphere, hear about the entries and feel part of the town’s biggest night of carnival celebrations. Of course, Taunton Carnival is about much more than spectacular lights and entertainment. At its heart lies a wonderful tradition of fundraising and community support. Throughout the procession, spectators generously threw donations into the collection trucks accompanying the entries. Every contribution helps make a difference, with the Carnival Committee selecting local charities each year to benefit from the money raised.
The 2026 Taunton Carnival was a fantastic celebration of local talent, teamwork and generosity. From the outstanding carnival entries and enthusiastic crowds to Apple FM’s coverage and the generosity of spectators, the evening captured everything that makes this long-standing Somerset tradition so special.
