Running a radio station.. It costs money, Honey!
It takes approximately £7000 a year to keep Apple FM on at its most basic level. Ideally, we need to be raising between £10-£15,000 every year to enable us to maintain and replace or update our equipment properly and to be able to consider a new projects and new equipment and to allow the station to grow further.
Our licence, just to be able to broadcast on the air is £850 per year, then we have to pay for the rights to play music, which is over £2500 per year! The costs, like these, go on and on!
Our mixing desk, for example, is now over 25 years old and has had a LOT of wear and tear over this time! Replacement parts for the console start at a minimum of £200 each and go upwards of £800 each individual audio channel, depending what each channel does. They have to be replaced when they start to fail with the amount. of use they get from being in a busy studio!
The radio station software that we use to make Apple FM come to life is not cheap! We use professional level broadcast software so that we can give you the best radio station possible. Unfortunately, this does need to be updated from time to time, and upgrades to new versions of the software cost hundreds of pounds a time, per individual computer! But without this software, we couldn’t provide as good as service as we want to and are doing.
We sell advertising space on our airwaves to businesses, as you know, but we pride ourselves in making our fees a sensible and sustainable amount to allow radio advertising available to every business, no matter how big or small. This means that we don’t make a lot of profit from advertising, but part of our reason of existing is to help local businesses from within our own community reach bigger audiences, to keep the community thriving. Advertising income from businesses that use us to promote their business is a good form of income, but it does not bring in as much as we need.

By taking part in and playing our weekly lottery, you are actively helping to keep our fantastic radio station alive for the entire local community. It’s only £1 per ticket per week; it really is a very cheap and easy way to help Apple FM continue its work.
Our lottery is run by Somerset Council and is registered with the Gambling Commission, so you know everything is run properly like a good lottery should be. Your odds of winning are much, much better than of winning on the national lottery, too!
