Maybe you’re studying radio, media or journalism and would like to gain some media experience – maybe you’re retired or just have a couple of hours a week to spare and are looking for a rewarding way to help a small local charitable community organisation – we can help.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to have any previous broadcasting experience?
The short answer is no. Whilst experience can be helpful, community radio is very different to other kinds of media.
How do I become a Volunteer?
Apple FM’s members are all Volunteers. To join our team our HR director will send you a link to complete an online Application Form. We will then invite you along to speak to him and explain more about us and how we operate.
Can I have my own programme immediately?
To become a Presenter you will be placed with one of our Training Presenters and your abilities and needs will be assessed so we can determine if and when you will be ready for your own programme. We also like new members to demonstrate a commitment to the station during their training. Activities may include assisting Presenters, assisting at outside events and handling competitions.
Do I have to become a Presenter? I want to help, but the thought of being on air makes me nervous, so I'd rather help in some other way, if possible?
Absolutely not! You could join our outside events team, our advertising sales team, be an admin assistant, help update our social media and website pages, be the studio cleaner or any number of other jobs.
Our events crew attend local events and could be asked to do anything from handing out leaflets to providing the entertainment on stage.
Our sales team are responsible for liaising with local organisations and companies to procure sponsorship or advertising deals that will generate an income for Apple FM.
Other roles are available; please do speak to our HR director and they will tell you more about any of the roles
Is there any age limit?
Volunteers must be over 16 years of age and have Parental Consent (except in exceptional circumstances). There is no maximum age limit.
What are the commitments of a volunteer?
Our volunteers need to support Apple FM in one of the ways mentioned above. We require all our volunteers to take part in at least two outside events per year. Volunteers must also pay a small yearly membership fee.
How quickly will I hear back from Apple FM after filling in and submitting an Application Form?
You will hear back within 4 weeks from your initial contact to say we have received and are processing your application. If you have not heard from us by this time, please contact our Human Resources Director.
