Somerset Council and NHS Somerset to commemorate COVID-19 Day of Reflection

Somerset Council will join the nation in marking the fifth anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic on 9 March 2025, as part of the COVID-19 Day of Reflection. This day serves as a solemn reminder of the impact the pandemic had on our communities, while also recognising the extraordinary efforts of those who worked tirelessly to protect and care for others.

In particular, to honour and express deep gratitude for health and care workers, who played a vital role on the frontline of the crisis, Somerset Council will light its A Block building in green; a colour symbolic of care, compassion and resilience. This tribute acknowledges the selfless dedication of health and care workers who supported society’s most vulnerable during this incredibly challenging period.

Councillor Graham Oakes, Lead Member for Public Health, Climate Change and Environment said: “The COVID-19 pandemic touched every corner of our community, bringing loss, hardship and unimaginable challenges. But in those dark times, we also witnessed incredible courage and compassion, especially from our health and care workforce. They cared for our loved ones, put others before themselves and carried an enormous burden to keep people safe.

“Lighting A Block in green is a simple yet powerful gesture to say: ‘Thank You’.”

Shelagh Meldrum, Chief Nursing Officer and Director of Operations, NHS Somerset said: “We would like to ask everyone in Somerset to take a moment on Sunday 9 March to reflect and remember. Whether by lighting a candle, sharing stories, or simply offering a kind word to someone who has been impacted.

“I know from first-hand experience the impact the pandemic had on our healthcare colleagues as well as our wider communities.  It was a time none of us will forget. The NHS today remains as always, committed to protecting our people and communities from the impact of COVID-19, ensuring that people stay safe and well. Sunday provides a chance to come together to acknowledge the pain and loss felt as a result of the pandemic and to share our lived experiences.”

Councillor Sarah Wakefield, Lead Member for Adults Services, Housing and Homelessness at Somerset Council said, “The Covid-19 pandemic was a difficult time for us all, but perhaps no more so than for those working in the health and care sector, who sacrificed so much to look after us and the people we love. The selflessness, dedication and resilience displayed by carers, both paid and unpaid, across Somerset and beyond can never truly be thanked for enough.

“To the health and care workers, we extend our deepest gratitude and appreciation for your unwavering commitment and compassion during such trying times. Your efforts have made a profound difference in the lives of countless individuals, and I know that we will all continue to remember and honour your contributions.”

Somerset Council encourages residents, businesses, and organisations to join in commemorating this important day, whether by lighting buildings, sharing messages of support, or taking a moment for quiet reflection.
