Wales and West Utilities (WWU) are scheduled to carry out major gas main replacement works in Taunton from this spring and are holding a public drop-in next week.
WWU is upgrading the gas mains around Bishops Hull Road and Silk Mills Road in Taunton from 31 March.
This essential project will ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas to local homes and businesses. It will require road closures and traffic management and Somerset Council is urging local people to attend the drop-in session to find out more.
The drop in session is on 12 March from 2-7pm at Robin Close Communal Hall, Bishops Hull, TA1 5EU. Residents can view plans and discuss the project directly with the team.
The project runs from 31 March is expected to be completed by mid-September. Dates and durations are subject to change due to engineering progress.
The project involves a £357,000 investment and is part of a broader, multi-million-pound, 30-year gas pipe investment programme across Wales and the South West of England. Old metal gas pipes are being replaced with new, long-lasting plastic ones that keep the gas flowing and make sure your network is ready to transport green gases like hydrogen and biomethane.
Work has already been carried out in the centre of Taunton in 2023, and good progress is being made in Chard.
To minimise disruption and ensure safety, the project will be carried out in two phases:
Phase One: Bishops Hull Road Scheme
- Road closure on Bishops Hull Road from 31 March to the end of June
- Work on Orchard Drive from 21 April to 4 May
- Road closures on Bishops Hull Road and Comeytrowe Lane, with 2-way traffic lights on Stonegallows and Wellington New Road from 27 May to 13 June
Phase Two: Mountway Road
- Directional closure on Silk Mills Road from 16 June to 25 July
- Directional closure on Silk Mills Road with a road closure of the junction of Mountway Road from 28 July to 17 August
- Directional closure on Silk Mills Road with a road closure on Waterfield Drive and a lane closure on Wellington New Road from 18 August to 7 September
Somerset Council will be working with WWU to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum. Find out more about the project in Taunton at Wales & West Utilities, contact WWU at 0800 912 2999.
